Morristown, N.J., June 29, 2022 -- Early in his career, Ryan McKay, ‘22, worked as a police dispatcher at the Morris County Communications Center. Answering 911 calls, Ryan remembers the countless times he provided CPR instructions to callers over the phone. With one dispatcher in charge of up to five towns in the county, and nearly eight monitors flashing on each desk at a time, the intensity of the job is not for the faint of heart. For Ryan, the job sparked a lifetime of interest in helping others.

“It was certainly a foot-in-the-door job experience for me as it solidified my goal of being on the other side of the radio as a police officer,” says Ryan. “You really have to excel at being able to multitask and handle the stress that comes with it.”

For the past decade, Ryan has been with the Morris Plains Police Department in positions of increasing responsibility. He was most recently promoted to a lieutenant position in October of 2021.

During his time as a police officer, Ryan felt that continuing his education would be crucial for his future. When he learned more about Saint Elizabeth University’s combined bachelor's in Criminal Justice and master's in Justice Administration and Public Service program, he was ready to take the next step towards his education.

“Going through an online master's program was very beneficial for me,” says Ryan. “During my time at SEU I became a new dad and continued to work 12 hour night shifts as an officer. I was able to do the work in my own time and it became manageable.”

He continues to be inspired by his goal of serving others in his community.

“Being a police officer is about being a servant leader,” says Ryan. “A lot of the time, we are there for people on their worst days. You have to be able to show empathy and put yourself in their shoes.”

For those who are interested in continuing their studies and pursuing a career in law enforcement, Ryan feels that dedication and commitment can set you apart. “You have to have passion and drive to work. You have to realize that it’s not going to come easy, but when you put your foot down you will reach your goals.”
