Holy Lives; Rainbow Buddha

On Display June 14, 2012 through August 31, 2012

This exhibition celebrates the amazing ways in which thirty-seven contemporary artists created images of, or references to, H(h)oly figures in African, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Islamic and Jewish religions. Delayed for a year because of damage to the Gallery by Hurricane Irene in August 2011, Holy Lives opens at a moment when it is particularly important for each of us to honor the fact that human beings around the globe worship in a multitude of ways. Our campus and members of our surrounding communities embrace many more religions than are represented here. Discovery, education, understanding and tolerance of diversity in all its aspects are at the core of the mission of the College and this exhibition. We have an opportunity to explore how contemporary artists depict or suggest religious figures, and we can compare the similarities and observe the differences in representations of images, teachings, narratives and/or rituals in various faith traditions.
