Counseling Services

How can the counseling services team help you?

SEU's Counseling Center provides a variety of evidence-based mental health and wellness interventions in a supportive, professional environment. We can help you understand yourself better to make positive changes.

Our counselors are available for in person sessions Monday through Friday at the center. We also offer virtual services 24/7, 365 days a year through the UWill online counseling program. If you would like to make an in-person appointment, please call us at 973-290-4132, email one of our counselors directly, or go to https://www.therapyportal.com/p/steu/

Initial Appointment

At this appointment, we will perform an assessment to determine the student's areas of concern, goals and what kinds of services would be helpful. After the assessment, the student may be recommended for individual counseling, group counseling or a referral.

Individual Counseling

The student meets with a trained clinician at a pre-scheduled time to address their goals by gaining insight, learning coping strategies and social skills, and finding other psychological or practical solutions. It is important to note that counseling at SEU is short-term and between 5-12 sessions per semester.

Group Counseling

Group counseling is also led by a trained clinician, and has the added benefit of having other group members who share some of your concerns and can offer support and feedback from a peer perspective. The number of group sessions is determined by the group counselor.

Referral

Sometimes students’ needs are better met by connecting them with another kind of service. We have a network of providers in the community and virtually to help students address clinical and non-clinical problems such as health concerns, substance treatment, psychiatric or specialized counseling services, accessibility support, or basic needs.

Walk-In Services

If a student is in crisis and needs urgent support, one of our counselors is available during work hours to provide same-day support. Non-emergency walk-in sessions are an option if a counselor is available, but getting an appointment immediately isn't guaranteed.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY, CALL 911 or Campus Security at (973) 290-4090.

Student Telehealth Office Space

SEU Telehealth SpaceIn the counseling center, we have a spare office space dedicated for students to use if they need to schedule a virtual doctor, therapist, or psychiatry appointment. Students will need to bring their own laptop. This office space is guaranteed to be private and confidential. It is available Mon-Thurs 9am-8pm, and Fridays 9am-4pm.

To reserve the space, please email: counseling@steu.edu
