Department of English

The English program provides its majors with a strong foundation in both literary and writing studies while offering non-English majors the opportunity to improve their writing skills and deepen their understanding of the enjoyment afforded to the informed reader.

Degree Options

Notable Literary Figures

Each semester, SEU welcomes writers, poets and other literary figures to campus for book readings and engagement events.

Among these are Gwendolyn Brooks, Poet Laureate Donald Hall, Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney, poet and essayist Patrick Rosal, poet Yesenia Montilla, novelist Paul Lisicky and poet Cheryl Boyce Taylor.

Success Stories

"I didn't know how to read until I was 12 years old. I was born prematurely and had a few learning disabilities that made reading extremely difficult. When I came to SEU, my advisor suggested I major in English and I responded, ‘if you knew my background, you would not be asking me to do that.'

Two years later I earned my bachelor's in English and graduated with highest honors. Now, I've published several books and I wrote the first chapter of my first book as the final assignment for an English class at SEU."
