English as a Second Language (ESL) Certification/Endorsement is for candidates who currently hold a standard teaching certificate.
Program Highlights
- Online delivery with three start points during the Fall, Spring and Summer 1 semesters
- Can be completed within four semesters
- SEU's Education Programs are accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP)
The ESL Program is 16 credits* consisting of:
- ESL600 Studies in Cross Cultural Communication (3 credits)
- ESL601 Basic Theory and Practice Teaching ESL (3 credits)
- ESL602 Phonology and Structure of American English (3 credits)
- ESL603 General Linguistic/Language Acquisition (3 credits)
- ESL604 Systematic Observation and Field Experience in a Bilingual/Multicultural School (3 credits)
- ESL605 Introduction to ESL Assessment (1 credit)
Applicants are required to:
- Submit an application
- Provide a copy of a New Jersey Standard Instructional Certificate or CEAS
- Provide an official transcript of documentation for an earned baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university
- Have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher on a 4.0 scale
- Have completed one course (3 credits) in world language at the graduate or undergraduate level
- Have a passing score on the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and the Written Proficiency
(WPT)
The Oral Proficiency Interview is a 20-30 minute, one-on-one interview between the tester and examinee. The Written Proficiency Test is an on-demand test that measures your writing comprehension in a particular language. The test consists of two to five writing tasks.
