Hazing Prevention at SEU

Hazing Prevention at Saint Elizabeth University

Hazing is not tradition. It’s harm.

At Saint Elizabeth University (SEU), we believe that every student deserves to be welcomed into our community with dignity, safety, and respect. Hazing has no place at SEU and is a serious violation of both university policy and New Jersey state law. It undermines trust, threatens well-being, and damages the sense of belonging we strive to create on our campus.

What is Hazing?

Hazing includes any activity that “humiliates, degrades, abuses, endangers, or violates the law,” regardless of a person’s willingness to participate. This includes behaviors connected to initiation, affiliation, or ongoing participation in a group, team, or organization.

According to SEU’s Student Code of Conduct:

“Hazing is defined as any action or situation which recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student… for the purpose of initiation into or affiliation with any organization.”

You can review the full hazing policy in the SEU Student Code of Conduct (PDF).

Under New Jersey law, hazing is a disorderly persons offense when it places someone at risk of bodily injury. If it results in serious bodily injury, it becomes a fourth-degree crime. Hazing may involve physical acts, coercive rituals, forced consumption, sleep deprivation, or any other conduct that disrespects the dignity and safety of an individual.

SEU’s Commitment

SEU is committed to fostering a culture where all students feel safe, supported, and empowered. Hazing stands in direct conflict with our Catholic values, our mission of ethical leadership, and our community standards.
