Institutional Review Board
Before submitting a proposal to the IRB, the researchers must complete ONE of the online certifications:
- The National Institutes of Health (NIH)
The NIH certification focuses on biomedical research. SEU nursing students, as well as many nutrition students, will find NIH training most relevant.; or, - The Collaborative Institutional Training Institute (CITI) sponsored by the University
of Miami.
The CITI certification focuses behavioral/social research. SEU students in business, education, and the social sciences will find this option most relevant.
Student researchers are encouraged to discuss which option is appropriate with their
professor.
After you have completed your certification, you should download a copy of your certification,
retain a copy for your records, and submit a copy with your Submission Form to the
SEU IRB.
Both the NIH and CITI online certifications contain several modules. You must complete
a module's quiz at one session, but you do not need to take all of the quizzes at
one time. If you choose to do the CITI course, be sure to select the basic course.
Your scores on each quiz are stored in your account and after you have completed all
of the quizzes, you can obtain your score. Do not be concerned if you get a message
after the initial quizzes that you have failed. You need to complete all of the quizzes
in order to receive a passing grade and become certified.
You may take each quiz as many times as you like to improve your score.
