Best Kept Secret No More: SEU Takes Top 5 in the Nation at AAPA Competition

June 01, 2026

The atmosphere inside the New Orleans convention center hall was electric. The stakes? High-velocity medical trivia under blazing lights at the American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA) National Medical Challenge Bowl. The competition? A daunting field of 87 powerhouse Physician Assistant (PA) programs from every corner of the United States.

But when the dust settled, it wasn't the massive state research institutions or Ivy League behemoths capturing the national spotlight. It was the blue and white of Saint Elizabeth University.

In a historic performance that has sent shockwaves through the medical education community, SEU’s PA students claimed a remarkable Top 5 national finish, officially securing fifth place in the nation.

What it Means to Beat the Giants

The AAPA Challenge Bowl is not a casual game of trivia. It is a high-pressure, fast-paced academic gauntlet testing split-second knowledge across heavy clinical disciplines: cardiology, pulmonology, physical diagnosis, microbiology, anatomy, and emergency medicine.

To put SEU's fifth-place finish into perspective, consider the sheer scale of the field. Our students went buzzer-to-buzzer against 87 teams, outcompeting massive medical tracks and legacy programs with deep institutional footprints.

The Secret is Out: For years, the SEU community has known the caliber of our faculty, the rigor of our coursework, and the dedication of our students. This historic win does more than just bring a trophy back to campus — it signals to the rest of the country that SEU is no longer healthcare education’s best kept secret. We belong on the national stage.

This achievement cements SEU’s reputation as an elite hub for medical training. It tells clinical coordinators, hospital networks, and future employers across the country that an SEU graduate has been measured against the absolute best in the nation — and has come out on top.

Beyond the Bowl: Immersed in Cutting-Edge Medicine

While the Challenge Bowl was a clear pinnacle, the national tournament was just one element of a transformative week. As registered delegates at the broader AAPA 2026 National Conference, SEU students stepped out of the classroom and directly into the future of healthcare.

The conference served as an immersive laboratory for our future clinicians. In the expansive Expo Hall, SEU students got hands-on experience with cutting-edge medical technologies. They engaged directly with disruptive clinical solutions at the Project Innovation Exchange and participated in iScan26—a high-energy, gamified point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) training event designed specifically to give students mastery over next-generation diagnostic imaging tools.

Beyond the technology, the conference provided invaluable access to the minds shaping modern medicine:

  • Learning from Global Experts: Our students sat in on specialized lectures selected from over 200 hours of evidence-based Continuing Medical Education (CME) tracks, gaining insights into updated clinical guidelines and therapeutics.

  • Main Stage Inspiration: They attended major presentations featuring industry leaders, including a unique live exploration of nutrition and community healthcare with legendary Chef Emeril Lagasse, and a masterclass on bridging generational divides in patient communication led by researcher Jason Dorsey.

  • Professional Networking: From the PA JobSource Career Fair to the ultimate PA Night Out at Mardi Gras World, students networked with over 5,000 PAs and peers from all 50 states, building relationships that will anchor their future careers.

The SEU PA Program: Built for the Frontlines

This national recognition is a direct reflection of the culture driving SEU’s Physician Assistant program. Built on a foundation of rigorous academic preparation, immersive clinical training, and a deep commitment to social responsibility, the program is designed to create clinicians who are as compassionate as they are clinically sharp.

While legacy institutions often rely on sheer scale, SEU thrives on precision, mentorship, and a community where every student is pushed to lead. The victory and professional growth witnessed in New Orleans are validations of our faculty’s tireless dedication and our curriculum's exceptional caliber.

A Community United in Pride

Across campus and throughout our alumni network, the energy is undeniable. This team didn't just compete; they represented the very best of what it means to be an Eagle—focused, brilliant, resilient, and fiercely determined.
