The Fair Use doctrine, which is part of the Copyright Law, allows for limited use of portions of materials by faculty in not-for-profit educational institutions. Audio and video use in classes is allowed as per the usage limitations specified in the Copyright Law, Guidelines for Off-air Recording of Broadcast Programs for Educational Use developed by Congress, and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

The downloading of media (music and video) from the Internet or from other users is covered under the Copyright Law. If someone has not paid for a piece of media and does not have the legal right to own a copy of it, the user should not download it or retain a copy of it on their computer or network file space.
