What to Expect

We know that using the library can be an unfamiliar or stressful experience! We hope to be as transparent as possible about what typical goes on in the library so you can feel comfortable knowing what to expect while you’re here.

Mahoney Library has a small print collection on the second floor, containing literature and theology books. You are welcome to pick out books to read while you're here or check them out to read at home. To see our borrowing policies, please visit the Borrowing page. If you are finished reading a book and don't want to take it with you, please bring it back down to the circulation desk. This way, staff can track which books are being read!

Please treat our library books with respect - be careful when eating or drinking and use sticky notes if you want to annotate or take notes.

There are many books and resources on reserve at the circulation desk. To find out if your course has a book on reserve, ask your professor or browse all reserves. To check out a reserve book, come up to the circulation desk and ask for the book by title or by course name/number. Staff will ask for your SEU ID card, and keep it at the circulation desk until you return the book. You can take the book anywhere within the library, but must return the book to the circulation desk within two hours. Once you bring the book back to the circulation desk, you may check it out again if no one else is waiting to use that book.

Meeting with the librarian can go different ways depending on what you need - you can discuss search strategies, get help refining a topic idea or keywords, locate databases to search in, go over finding sources, practice evaluating sources and identifying misinformation/bias, and much more. The session will be tailored to what you need help with, and can be as long or as short as you need. If you need help with a specific assignment, it's good to bring in a copy of the assignment details or essay prompt, so the librarian can get a better idea of how to help you.

In a typical appointment, the librarian will ask you:

  • About your ideas for the assignment or topic
  • Where you are in the research process
  • Your current search strategy and what you've tried
  • What you've already found and are looking to find
  • If there's anything that you keep getting stuck on
  • If you feel comfortable moving ahead on your own (at the end of the appointment)

To schedule an appointment, click on the "Ask A Librarian" button in the sidebar of every page, or use the Make an Appointment form.

The designated quiet area in the library is the left side of the second floor (the side that doesn't have glass walls and computers). Library staff do not enforce any specific noise levels. However, a general guideline when in the quiet area is to keep conversations to a whisper level, and leave the room if you need to take a phone call.

There are a handful of whiteboards spread throughout the second floor of the library, and dry erase markers are available for check out at the circulation desk/IT help desk. You can move these around however you like.

Eating and drinking in the library is fine! Just make sure to clean up and throw away any trash or crumbs, and take care around library books. If a spill happens, please let us know at the circulation desk/IT help desk.

This area is open from 3pm to 11pm every weekday. The gaming equipment in the basement of the library is quite expensive, so please take care when using it. Keep food and drink far away from any equipment.
