Arithmetic

  • Fundamentals of Mathematics from OpenStax CNX
Fundamentals of Mathematics is a work text that covers the traditional study in a modern Pre-Algebra course, as well as the topics of estimation, elementary analytic geometry, and introductory algebra. It is intended for students who (1) have had previous courses in Pre-Algebra, (2) wish to meet the prerequisites of higher level courses such as elementary algebra, and (3) need to review fundamental mathematical concepts and techniques. Available online and in PDF format.
  • Prealgebra 2e from OpenStax
Prealgebra 2e is designed to meet scope and sequence requirements for a one-semester prealgebra or basic math course. The book’s organization makes it easy to adapt to a variety of course syllabi. The text introduces the fundamental concepts of algebra while addressing the needs of students with diverse backgrounds and learning styles. Each topic builds upon previously developed material to demonstrate the cohesiveness and structure of mathematics.

Introductory Algebra

  • Elementary Algebra from Katherine Yoshiwara [Pierce College]
Designed to introduce the basic skills and ideas of algebra. The content is brief yet sufficient enough for the reader to learn from them. Exercises given at the end of each section are also reasonable. Not too much, just enough to be done in one seating before the user gets exhausted. Available in PDF, hardcopy, and for viewing online.
  • Elementary Algebra 2e from OpenStax
Elementary Algebra 2e is designed to meet scope and sequence requirements for a one-semester elementary algebra course. The book’s organization makes it easy to adapt to a variety of course syllabi. The text expands on the fundamental concepts of algebra while addressing the needs of students with diverse backgrounds and learning styles. Available to download in PDF, view online, and order a print copy.
  • College Algebra 2e from OpenStax
College Algebra 2e provides a comprehensive exploration of algebraic principles and meets scope and sequence requirements for a typical introductory algebra course. The modular approach and richness of content ensure that the book addresses the needs of a variety of courses. College Algebra 2e offers a wealth of examples with detailed, conceptual explanations, building a strong foundation in the material before asking students to apply what they’ve learned. Available to download in PDF, view online, and order a print copy.

Contemporary/Modern Math

  • Contemporary Mathematics from OpenStax
Contemporary Mathematics is designed to meet the scope and sequence requirements for a liberal arts mathematics course. This resource provides stand-alone sections with a focus on showing relevance in the features as well as the examples, exercises, and exposition. Contemporary Mathematics integrates technology applications, projects, and highlights a diverse group of contributors to mathematics, statistics, and related fields.
  • Math in Society - Edition 2.5David Lippman [Pierce College]
Math in Society is a free, open textbook. This book is a survey of contemporary mathematical topics, most non-algebraic, appropriate for a college-level topics course for liberal arts majors. The text is designed so that most chapters are independent, allowing the instructor to choose a selection of topics to be covered. Emphasis is placed on the applicability of the mathematics. Core material for each topic is covered in the main text, with additional depth available through exploration exercises appropriate for in-class, group, or individual investigation. Available in hardcopy, PDF, and MS Word.
