Eight law enforcement community members were recently recognized by Saint Elizabeth University’s Police Studies Institution with the annual Black History Month Excellent in Policing Award.

The honorees represented local, state and federal agencies from New Jersey, New York, Houston, Washington, D.C. and Waco, Texas. More than 100 attendees celebrated as each was recognized for their outstanding individual accomplishments, leadership and service.

The Police Studies Institute is directed by Professor William Schievella who teaches criminal justice at Saint Elizabeth University. Schievella has been in law enforcement for more than 30 years and served as the Chief of Detectives in the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office and as an undersheriff in the Morris County Sheriff’s Office.

“I am proud to have Saint Elizabeth University serve as a host to many important law enforcement programs, especially those that highlight the accomplishments of talented law enforcement leaders. Black History Month celebrations for law enforcement are important ways to help build bridges in diverse communities. We are proud to be leaders in preparing a future diverse law enforcement workforce with our award-winning criminal justice programs.” said Schievella.

The Police Studies Institute brings together students, academic leaders, law enforcement officials and community leaders to advance the practice of policing. Through a number of executive development, educational and community events, the Police Studies Institute serves as an instrument for change in criminal justice and law enforcement.

Each year, The Police Studies Institute holds the Black History Month Excellence in Policing Awards to highlight the accomplishments of Black Law Enforcement Officers and expose diverse students to potential opportunities to serve their community as law enforcement officers.

“Events like these bring the community together for a positive purpose,” Schievella added.
